I was on the golf course Wednesday enjoying a round of golf and was surprised to find a racist comment written on the wall. I did not get overly upset but I am still surprised by the ignorance that still exists... I wrote the poem below that describes the situation...
There was a racist on the golf course today, how could that be?
They put it in writing for all to see...
It was not as surprising as it was shocking...
To witness this hatred as well as the mocking...
Perhaps they were jealous of young Tiger Woods...
Because he plays the game so freaking good...
Whatever the reason it's still not right...
But there it was written in black and white...
Right in the restroom written on the wall...
Was the phrase, "Nigars stick to basketball."
They misspelled the slur which shows their IQ...
Animals like this belong in the zoo...
Racism is painful and still very real...
After reading this writing, what do you feel?

While working on my clinicals, I witness racist patients. They don't want certain nurses to take care of them. With a severely understaffed facility, it's difficult to accomodate them all of the time. I often see them fighting the very people that are there to care for them. My brother is dating a girl that he's in love with. A girl that has been wonderful for him. She's educated, she's family oriented, polite, just a solid individual. She's also Hispanic. She's also black. My mom is not accepting of the relationship. She has chosen to push my brother away. I try hard to get her to see her hatred and how it's affecting the relationship with her son. She's so accepting/welcoming with my special someone, and yet so different with my brother. It's a hatred I can't understand. I tell myself I wasn't raised this way. I often tell my mother, my generation won't be this way. We won't have this hatred towards people of different races. I sincerely hope we don't. My brother's happiness is important to me. I am glad that he is dating someone, that despite my mother, still wants a relationship with him, loves him the same, and is so good to him
